Milestones

9” x 12” Gouache

At first glance, this painting depicts a normal moment in day to day life, a child getting a haircut in a barbershop. From the perspective of an adult, it is easy to forget the importance simple moments such as these hold for young children. Something as small as a haircut means significantly more when it is happening for the first time. This first haircut became a milestone, a marker of the growth and learning that happens in the first year of life. To add to that, being a child during a pandemic had an impact on moments such as these for young children everywhere. In a situation where the child would benefit most from a sense of trust and security, he is denied the option of being able to see either the face of the barber, or his own father due to the requirement for masks during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
